420 and Patriot’s Day A Day of Celebration for New England Sport’s Fans and Stoners
April 20th or 4/20, as it is known to marijuana smokers all over the world, is a celebration that is not likely to become a national holiday anytime soon. Patriot’s day is a holiday in New England only. Today was a magical day where the two unique holidays collided in one very special day that may never be repeated again.
First let me explain that I am a former Bostonian so I vividly remember Patriot’s Days of yore. I was also known to smoke a bit of the weed back in my high school days so I appreciate the significance of the day to those who partake in the reefer. Strangely enough I do not recall the holiday of 4/20 being such a big deal back in the day. (This does not necessarily mean it was not a big deal as it is entirely possible that I misremembered it as Roger Clemens would say.)
I remember waking up at the crack of noon on Patriot’s day just about every year, actually it was about 11:00, but it sounds funnier to say at the crack of noon. As a huge Red Sox fan I was always excited because they play at 11:00 a.m. every Patriot’s Day. No baseball game is ever that earlier so it always felt strange. Sort of like if you are camping and you crack open a beer before noon. You feel like you should probably wait, but you are on vacation so you decide to start a little early. It is also the day they hold the Boston Marathon, which is the most prestigious marathon in the world. I never watched the marathon, but I always liked how during the Red Sox game they would show footage of the race when it went past Fenway Park. At some point during the game they would tell us which Kenyan won the race and hopefully the Red Sox would win. That was about the extent of it. Much like how a stoner smokes pot every day and usually at 4:20 in the afternoon, a Red Sox fan watches them every day, but getting to watch them at 11:00 AM is our version of 4/20.
Well this year’s Patriot’s Day was even better than usual for Boston sport’s fans as in addition to the Sox and the marathon, the Bruins and Celtic’s playoff games were on later that night. If you were a Boston Sport’s fan and also enjoyed having a wake and bake slightly before noon then I don’t think it gets much better.
The Red Sox dominated the Orioles 12-1. The Boston Marathon was won by an Ethiopian in a mild upset and the women’s marathon was decided by a second, which is ridiculous when you consider the length of the race. They were both trying to sprint, but neither had much stamina left. The one with a little bit more energy left was able to pull out the win. It is reminiscent of two stoners sitting on the couch watching television both wanting to eat the last cupcake on the other side of the room, but not wanting to get up to get it. When one summons the energy they both start to try to get up to get it, but only one of them has enough energy to do so.
Later on that night the Celtic’s managed to win on a last second three pointer by Ray Allen and the Bruins beat their hated rival Montreal Canadiens again to go up three games to none. Living in New York and having the various sports packages required for a diehard Boston Sport’s fan I was able to experience most of the thrill of Patriot’s Day. I did not however smoke any weed.

No I am not paranoid I think someone is watching us.
Part of me wished I was in Boston awakening to a freshly packed bowl and the Red Sox game on NESN. Maybe I would actually live in the city of Boston and I would hear a commotion outside my window and look outside and see all of the runners passing by in the street. Then when I thought the day could not get better I would run into Tom Brady and Giselle Bundchen who would ask me if I wanted to go to the Celtic’s game with them and Giselle’s supermodel friend. I would miss the Bruin’s game, but I would decide to go to the game with Tom, Giselle and their friend as it would be slightly better than sitting at home flipping back and forth between the Bruins and the Celtics. Sure no one outside of New England knows what Patriot’s Day is and ironically the only major New England team that did not play was the Patriots. Sure most stoners do not even know why 420 is a celebrated day and time of the day. I don’t think irony is the right word for that as if you have known any stoners that is the sort of thing you would expect. All things considered it was a pretty sweet day man.
