Heroes Appears to be Turning Around
The first season of Heroes was truly a wonder to behold. It was a huge ratings win for NBC. It was also able to be the rare network show which created a buzz every week. I remember going into work on Tuesdays after Heroes was on and everyone would be talking about it. Sure there were people who talked about Survivor or American Idol or other shows I was not interested in, but this was different. Somehow the show connected with a much larger segment of people than was anticipated. Everything about the first season was great. Well first of all it was new and like anything that is new and exciting and fresh we tend to overlook some of its flaws. I remember thinking as the first season wound down that perhaps Heroes would best be served as a one season run with it going out on top, but I knew that would never happen. In Hollywood successful television shows or movies get beaten into the ground until the show is on years later and people barely remember it at its nadir. People always reference how the British do it differently and this is true in some instances. The British version of the Office ended after only two seasons. There are some shows though like Shameless which go on for years. It currently airs on Sundance Channel for those of us living in the Unitd States and it is one of the funnier shows on television currently, but that was not my point. The point is that sometimes a show should be done on a short run only, but other shows are able to stay viable for years.
I was finally convinced that Heroes was one of the shows which should have been a one or two season affair only, until last night. They went back to the original writer Brian Fuller a few episodes ago and it appears he has been busy tying up some loose ends recently. It may be premature to say this, but I think there is still some hope left in this show after all.
(Spoiler Alert) I am going to talk about last night’s episode.
Before I discuss how I like some of the recent developments on the show I would first like to express a concern. I believe Heroes may be becoming a sausage fest. Hear me out. They killed Kristen Bell, Nelle, earlier this year. Last night they killed Daphne and the Ice Queen. I can understand killing the ice queen as every form of her whether it was Tracy Strauss or Nicky Sanders or Jessica were all terrible characters. All the powers were boring and most of them did not make sense. Really most of the characters had fascinating powers that you could imagine would be fun to have, but initially her power was that she had multiple personality disorder. It was as if her character was meant for a daytime soap opera instead of Heroes. Then the writers obviously realized how bad her character was so they killed her off and brought her back with the same powers as Mr. Freeze from Batman. It was awkward for Mika to come back and have him not be her son, but his character was actually interesting so it was a good idea to bring him back. I am guessing everyone else figured out the mysterious character, Rebel, was him before they showed him too. Anyway it is nothing personal against the actress, Ali Larter, who played all those uninspired characters, but I hope they do not try to bring her back again as someone else. They should bring on another female character though. Hayden Panettiere is the only remotely attractive female cast member left and she was not even in last night’s show.

"Be brave Claire Bear you are the last woman left, except your grandma. Do you mind if I call you Claire Bear? Your dad does so I thought it would be okay."
I almost forgot they also killed off Maya, Dania Ramirez, who although she creeped me out a little with her whole bleeding from her eyes and killing people thing she had going on, she was fairly attractive though. I was actually starting to like Daphne a little, but then they killed her. I like the idea of having less Heroes I just hope more than one of them is a female.
Okay enough with the complaints. It was great that they killed off some of the more boring plot points and characters. They went the whole show without showing Claire and Sylar, and Peter was only onscreen for about five seconds, but that was necessary in order to tie up the old story lines and introduce us to Rebel. The second season was disastrous, partially due to the writer’s strike and this season started off slowly, but they are finally making some of the tough decisions that needed to be made in order for this show to eventually be nearly as good as it was the first season. It has been picked up for a fourth season so hopefully the rest of this season will give us a reason to want to watch next year.
