Checking Your Blood Sugar: There’s An App For That

The latest Apple rumor is that they will soon release an app for checking your blood sugar and that they will eventually come out with either an accessory  or a separate device yet to be named to check your blood sugar to be sold separately. Well not really, but I could picture the commercial for such an application for the iPhone and the iPod touch. Apple is determined to make sure you can do anything on your iPhone and this is likely the next evolution that will be coming soon to the app store. There are so many possibilities.

Initially you will likely have to buy third party accessories in order to have support for this application, but soon they could either make a special iBlood or perhaps make support standard on iPhones. They could start selling them at pharmacies and other durable medical equipment suppliers worldwide. Maybe your insurance would even cover the cost of your iPod or iBlood depending on which way Apple goes with the idea. I am not an expert on marketing, but I did see the commercial for the new blood sugar monitor by Contour that comes in multiple colors and looks suspiciously like an iPod. If there is a market for that there is certainly a market for the new Apple iBlood.

Surely diabetics would love to be considered hip. When you pull out your glucose monitor now the ladies are not impressed, but pull out your iBlood and you will be the envy of all the ladies. Nursing homes have a disproportionate number of diabetics and if you thought the Rascal was a must have for a hip senior, well it will be old news when the iBlood hits the market.

The possibilities for this are endless. As everyone knows when you are a diabetic you need test strips and lancets to go along with your monitor so there is much money to be made by Apple in the supplies to go with the iBlood or whatever it is they are going to call it.

I actually have a more controversial idea and a new name to go along with the for the new Apple product. I think it should be called the iPrick. No that is not a reference to the guy who uses his iPhone in inappropriate places like the movie theater or in line at a coffee shop it is the best name for the product as it describes what it will do. It will have a built in stylus that can also be used to prick your finger when you do a half circle on the scroll wheel or something like that. I do not own any Apple products so I will leave that to their engineers to figure out. I know that adding a stylus to an Apple product is probably blasphemous to you Apple fans as Apple abhors the use of a stylus, but really what is the alternative. If you prick your finger and then accidentally touch the screen you will get blood all over it.

The greatest potential for this device is the social networking aspect of it. You think people are excited to read your Twitters or Facebook updates wait until they get updates every time you check your blood sugar. Of course there are some possibilities for people to be taken advantage of with the social networking ability of the iPrick. Like the advertisements that want you to take an iq test to compare your score with Barack Obama or Paris Hilton, there will likely be ads telling you Rush Limbaugh’s blood sugar is 292 and asking you if you think you can beat him. Of course this will likely not be the real score of Limbaugh just as the iq test score for Obama was not real. You will be duped into signing up for this service anyway, but you will feel good for a little while bragging to your friends about how your blood sugar compares to celebrities until someone breaks the bad news to you. Also although the social networking feature of the iPrick was initially introduced to help you connect with other diabetics and help you to maintain a healthier lifestyle it will likely be used by teenagers to see who can get a higher score. I have seen a similar idea which was initially meant to be helpful be used for such nefarious purposes when I received a breathalyzer as a gift years ago.

Full Disclosure: I do not have a source of any kind inside Apple. I made this rumor up as most people who obsess about Apple do. There is also no truth to the rumor that Apple will soon begin selling iPricks at McDonald’s drive thrus but if you want to report that as though it will actually happen, like you did with the $99 Walmart iPhone feel free to do so. I seriously hope that I am the first one to report these Mac rumors, but as I have found out the hard way it has probably been done already. I thought I had thought up a good Mac rumor about the iPhone Shuffle where there is only one button and it calls people on your list at random, but there was already a YouTube video with the same idea courtesy of Newgrounds.com. Please feel free to share your thoughts about whether you would use an iPrick or whether you would buy one in the drive thru. Even greater than my fear that someone else has already reported a similar rumor is the fear that Apple will use this idea and make millions off it and I will never see a dime from it. Of course if it provides my readers with a chuckle or two it will all be worth it, not millions but you know what I mean.

  • Well I only saw that one you linked to and was not too impressed. Maybe I
will check out some of the other stuff on the site some other time.

I joked about being able to check your blood sugar on the iPhone, but I saw
a commercial last night saying there is an app for reading an mri on the
iPhone so maybe it is not so far fetched after all.

  • That is where I went wrong. Instead of trying to write a whole post about an idea I thought people would like I should have just posted a picture of an Ipod and posted a short thought meant to shock people. Of course I should know better no one wants to read anymore. If I had put a video or a photoshop of the idea it probably would have went better and gotten more comments. I did not mean this reply to sound so bitter. Sorry about that.
