Never Get Involved in a Land War in Asia

The feed of this post does not include the video clip of John Cleese on Jimmy Kimmel so if you are interested in seeing that click the headline of the article to go to the post on the site.  It is eleven minutes long, but it is not a waste of time. I have never even seen Monty Python and I found Cleese’s rant about the other members of Monty Python to be hysterical. I am about to watch the Meaning of Life right now so we will see if it lives up to the title. Even if it does not, if it is as funny as Cleese’s clip from Kimmel I will be satisfied. This post links to a few posts that are related in varying degrees to the movie Princess Bride that are all interesting in their own way. If you have not seen Princess Bride you should correct that immediately. It is inconceivable that you would not like it if you had seen it so we won’t discuss that at this time.

Princess Bride Links

The first link is to a post which begins by repeating a rant of a drunken girl about how only men like Princess Bride, but expands to reveal that apparently there are members of both genders who believe the film is not intended for them or other members of their respective gender. It seems to be a unique film in that both sides argue this. It may not be unique, but I cannot think of an example of another film which leads both men and women to think it was made specifically for the opposite gender. Of course in the comments section of the page a general consensus is reached that people who make this argument are mistaken, but despite being a flawed argument, it is still an interesting one. The link is from Cinematical, which I recently came across and has become one of my favorite sources for anything related to movies.

The next day I came across another post referencing the Princess Bride. I had not searched for it either time, but as discussed by most in the previous link’s comment section it is a widely beloved film by men and women alike. This link references a famous line from the movie, but uses it to point out some of the author’s pet peeves regarding people misusing words in their writing. It is worth a look as although it can be annoying when people correct your grammar and spelling, it is a good idea to occasionally have a refresher course in proper grammar. I am sure that I sometimes use improper grammar and if I do feel free to point it out. Just please try not to be obnoxious about it.

Then there was actually breaking news regarding the Princess Bride.

Princess Bride on Blu-Ray

It is important to realize that a film does not have to be filmed in HD to take advantage of an upgrade to Blu-Ray from DVD. Most films are filmed using 35 mm which has more than enough resolution to take advantage of an upgrade to High-Definition. Recently Seinfeld went back to the original film the show was shot on and upgraded their syndicated shows to HD. Unlike most films Seinfeld episodes were not shot in a widescreen formatso they had to be formatted to fit the screen.

And Now For Something Completely Different

In other news I have finally decided that I am going to watch Monty Python. I already borrowed the Meaning of Life from my brother. No I meant the film title. Sure my brother probably believes he has all the answers and knows the meaning of life, but I am not confident that he has them or at least anywhere near a complete collection of the answers. As I said previously when I first saw Monty Python I was really young and I never revisited it. I Over the years I have often overheard people quoting Monty Python, but I just rolled my eyes. It is annoying when other people constantly reference something which has little or no meaning to you. Sure I can understand that nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition, with the exception of the Inquisitors, but the quote never had any proper context because I had not seen the movie. Also I figured that it was the sort of thing that would not be as funny if you watched it now, as comedy does not always hold up years later. Recently I read Don Quixote and found it hilarious four hundred years later so by comparison Monty Python is practically brand new. I mentioned the other day that I thought I might finally give it a chance, then I saw John Cleese on Jimmy Kimmel last night and it was one of the funniest interviews I have seen in some time. Kimmel asked him if he still keeps in touch with the other Monty Python members and he went on a rant describing how he really does not like many of the other members. I especially liked the parts about Terry Gilliam who is a talented director, but sometimes bites off more than he can chew. The whole interview is entertaining, but when Kimmel asks the question about whether he keeps in touch with the other Python members at the 4:29 mark of the clip the hilarity really ensues.
