I have experienced many ghetto marts in my day and I concur on your negative opinion of the experience. I have been in some that have armed security near the door. I do remember Shawshank Redemption and Brooks would probably share your negative attitude about supermarkets.

Fucking-a, man: amazing. It adds an entirely new element of "bad vibing" to the grocery shopping experience, where you can really get into the experience of being a minority for the first time, and where you always leave in worse mood than you walked in with. It's pretty incredible, really-I guess the quarterback doesn't work in there.
