Dickness

No I am not starting an x-rated blog. It started because I was discussing the possibility of starting a new blog with a prospective business partner. We knew if we put our heads together we could create something special, but it could not just be some weak effort. I had to consciously step up my game for this new collaboration. Since he happens to be a computer whiz it seemed like a good idea to let him handle most of the technical aspects of setting up and running the blog and that would let me concentrate on the blogging instead of spending most of my time learning how to run and host my own blog. I have learned a lot in recent months about blogging, but hosting your own blog is much more involved than just blogging on a Blogger or Wordpress hosted blog. There are many benefits to hosting your own blog though so I have decided to go that route, but I have chosen to let my business associate handle hosting the blog. Since this is still a work in progress we are still in the process of determining exactly how this works and crossing the eyes and potting the trees, etc.

When we were discussing this new potential business arrangement he kept calling me Dickness. I know that seems entirely unprofessional, but he is related to me so I let it slide and did not really comment on it. Also my last name is Dick. No one has ever called me Dickness before and although I did not comment on it I was slightly annoyed by it.  After I was done talking to him and we had agreed to start this new blog I was thinking about the new blog and what it was going to be. At the same time I was thinking about this strange nickname which had been nothing more than a minor irritation. First I was reminded that on the Chappelle show Charlie Murphy discussed how Rick James used to call him darkness. I got a slight chuckle out of thinking of substituting Dickness for darkness. Not that I could have partied with the legendary Rick James. Cocaine may be a hell of a drug, but I would not know. As a young Celtic fan Len Bias dying from an overdose of cocaine when he was just on the precipice of an outstanding NBA career scared me so much that I never wanted to try it. Anyway even though I knew I did not have what it takes to party with Rick it was funny considering the possibility. The next thought I had was about the Disturbed song “Down with the Sickness”. This is where I got the idea to name the blog Dickness.com. Replace Sickness with Dickness. For example get down with the Dickness, the Dickness is rising, etc. Yeah it is kind of stupid, but it is sort of catchy and an easy way to promote the blog. One possible benefit of the new blog title is that people will accidentally stumble across this page thinking it is x-rated. Part of me thinks that those who accidentally stumble across the page thinking it is pornography will initially be disappointed, but maybe they will be intrigued and bookmark it for when they are done surfing for things that they cannot find on this site. Of course the confusion over the name will also likely be the worst part of the new name so it is a bit of a double edged sword. Hopefully the name does not cause it to get blocked by work filters or filtered by some search engines. Anyway the new name and the new blog will ultimately help me to have a sharper focus on my content. In the past I have often not been willing to go out on a limb for many reasons. Most of my readers were relatives or friends and I was afraid I would offend some of them. Also putting all of your opinions on the web including the controversial ones can be a little scary. The first thing to realize when you are blogging is to not be afraid to express your opinions and also you have to realize that people will always disagree with you. Really though I want this to be a two-way conversation so if you disagree or are offended by something I say feel free to post a comment and let me know, but I am making it a point to be more of a dick. Again as I said in the previous post it is not really in my nature and it seems to be a negative trait, but sometimes you have to learn to not let things bother you. I tend to be on the opposite end of the Dickness spectrum in this regard so it would actually do me some good to move a little closer to the middle of this spectrum.  Develop a thicker skin if you will. Really I did not mean that to be a pun, but maybe that will give you an idea of what it is like to have the last name Dick. People never get tired of thinking of clever things to say about it. Often they think they have said something original, but trust me I’ve heard it all before.

Really all you need to know if you are coming to this blog from the old one is that things are going to be different at this new blog. Mostly I am going to be focused on bringing more entertainment to the blog. No more boring movie reviews. Well I will still review boring movies and hopefully good ones as well, but no straightforward professional reviews. I am not Roger Ebert, Gene Siskel or Richard Roeper and occasionally I forget that. I know many bloggers prefer to have a niche to blog about. It is probably easier to gain a following if you stick to one topic and blog exclusively about said topic, but I am not an expert on any one particular topic. On my old blog I was starting to rely a little too heavily on pictures of Scarlett Johansson and a certain part of her anatomy, not really but I included pictures of her in posts that ultimately had little or nothing to do with her. She is a topic that interests me, but I can’t really blog exclusively about her or show pictures of her in every post which does not have an obvious picture to go with it. I am interested in many topics other than Scarlett such as sports, movies, television, technology, blogging, reading, eating. My interests range from the high-minded to the utterly stupid. One of the most fascinating things about life is that you often find yourself surprised at the things or the people that you ultimately enjoy spending time with or doing respectively. I said respectively so clearly I was not going where you went with that one. Really.
